Milton Keynes College apprentices enjoy dream visit to Downing Street

Milton Keynes College apprentices working in Formula One visited Downing Street to celebrate 75 years of the sport. The apprentices had the opportunity to meet some of the biggest names in the sport – all as guests of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

Jordan Smith, Engineering Workplace trainer at Milton Keynes College Group said it was the experience of a lifetime: “The apprentices were quite nervous at the beginning, so I asked them who they’d most like to speak to, and they said Sir Jackie Stewart, so we just walked up and said hello.”

“The apprentices are all big fans, but he was so nice to them. He told them they are the future of the motorsport industry, that they should be proud of their part in it, and he even thanked them for being involved.”

Emily Darlington, Milton Keynes Central MP, said: “What a fantastic experience for this great group of apprentices. Milton Keynes is the heart of F1 and with institutions like Milton Keynes College and the Open University in our city, it’s no surprise that so many young people in MK are making their mark. It’s also amazing to see so many more women getting involved in the sport.  I’m so glad to see everyone’s talent recognised in Downing Street.”

Miah, one of the apprentices from Milton Keynes College, was recently named as the youngest ever finalist in the Milton Keynes Women Leaders Awards. She said she’s it’s been a whirlwind few weeks to follow that with a visit to the Prime Minister’s home: “Visiting number 10 was an honour and a privilege. Seeing likeminded apprentices and others coming together at Downing Street to celebrate 75 years of F1 is an experience I will never forget.”

It has also been a rollercoaster ride for Jordan, who recently completed his teacher training at the College after a career in railway engineering. He said: “The College gave me the opportunity to move into teaching at just the right time, and I absolutely love it. I work with the apprentices on health and safety, electrical and fluid power, and it’s such a rewarding job.

“I’ve been able to do my own studies for my teaching qualifications alongside my work in the classroom, and it’s given me insights into different industries, visiting the apprentices at their employers in Formula One and other industries. It’s inspiring.”

Jordan says he was initially quite daunted by the idea of becoming a teacher, but he’s had brilliant support. “My Dad trained officers in the RAF, and between him and the people of the College who’ve looked after me along the way, I’ve always felt that there were people I could talk to about how to progress.

“I’ve really built my confidence in the classroom; I can put together my own lessons to make sure they’re engaging for the apprentices who are, frankly, brilliant. It’s not like school in that they’re all there because they want to be. It’s the most rewarding job you could ever do.”

The College Group is currently looking for teachers in a whole range of subjects. While we are keen to hear from experienced professionals, we are also searching for people coming from industry like Jordan, and recent graduates with up-to-date knowledge of their subjects. The right candidates will be put through their teacher training while they begin their careers.

The Brasserie hosts Armed Forces breakfast for veterans

Around 20 veterans attended the Armed Forces breakfast at Milton Keynes College’s The Brasserie, where they were joined by some of our staff who are part of the Armed Forces community. Celebrating Armed Forces Day and Reserves Day – and topping off Armed Forces Week – the breakfast provided an opportunity for Forces staff and veterans to network and share their experiences.

For the event on Friday 27th June, The Brasserie was decorated with bunting, banners and flags. Level 3 Catering students prepared the breakfast for the event with Hospitality students helping in the restaurant. The guests enjoyed a selection of breakfast foods, including sausage and bacon rolls, yoghurt, fruit and granola pots, fresh fruit platters, and ham and cheese croissants. The students received positive feedback from the guests.

The College Group supports colleagues who are part of the Armed Forces community and their families by offering additional leave for training for cadet volunteers and reservists, hosting discussions and training to encourage better understanding to support Armed Forces colleagues and advertising vacancies on specialist Armed Forces job boards for leavers and veterans.

Milton Keynes College Group received the Armed Forces Covenant Silver Award in September 2023, recognising the Group’s promise that those who serve or have served in the armed forces, and their families, are treated fairly.

Richie Carter, Workplace Trainer for Commis Chefs at Milton Keynes College Group, said: “As an ex-serviceman myself, these occasions are extraordinary. They provide a fantastic opportunity to help and support the Armed Forces community, where we can ‘pull up a sandbag’, and talk. It was wonderful observing people get together, introduce each other and make new acquaintances.

“It is important we remember – sharing is caring. Standing together, we are stronger together.”

Ben Burton, Recruitment Resourcer at Milton Keynes College Group, said: “Richie and his team at The Brasserie knocked it out the park again! Also thank you to my colleagues Pez Ryan, Peter Goodwin and Tina Leigh McDonald who are always championing our Armed Forces network and the Armed Forces Covenant. They remind us of what it’s about and why we have days for Reservists, Remembrance, VE and VJ days and weeks celebrating the work and sacrifice by all in our Armed Forces Family.

“This Armed Forces Day we thank all for their service; we thank all for their support, and we remember those who have served, and show support to those who still serve.”

Thailand trip of a lifetime: 36 Catering and Beauty students’ educational journey https://mkcollege.ac.uk/news/thailand-trip-of-a-lifetime-for-college-students/ Tue, 08 Apr 2025 08:49:29 +0000 https://mkcollege.ac.uk/?post_type=news&p=36705

Thailand trip of a lifetime: 36 Catering and Beauty students’ educational journey

In February 2025, thirty-six students from Milton Keynes College embarked on a trip of a lifetime to learn skills from experts in Thai cookery and massage. Student chefs and beauty therapists were given tuition in Bangkok over fifteen nights, working long days in training and revising for several hours more in the evenings. While the Catering students learned new recipes at the Suan Dusit International Culinary School, the Beauty Therapy students gained new skills at the Chiva-Som Academy.

The trip was enabled by a Turing Grant from the Department for Education, which is made for educational trips and work placements around the world – particularly for students from deprived areas.

Lucy Shamaro, Course Team Leader for Catering and Hospitality, said she was incredibly impressed by the way the students threw themselves into the experience: “The learners were absolutely amazing. They really embraced this opportunity and clearly recognised the trip for the incredible chance that it was. It was a success beyond anything we had expected.”

Louise Naish, Course Team Leader for Hair and Beauty, said: “The trainers were absolutely amazing, very thorough with their explanation of the theory side of things and with the practical. All the learners did brilliantly. Both groups of students were tested on what they’d been taught at the end of the week, and everybody passed and received their certificates. These are real skills they’ve now absorbed which will genuinely help them when they go to work.”

While there are courses in Thai cuisine and massage available in the UK, the staff and students agreed that being trained by expert practitioners in their own country adds a unique degree of authenticity. On their return to the UK, the students are putting their new skills to use straight away.  Members of the public visiting the College’s own restaurant, The Brasserie, will be able to sample Thai food on 1st and 8th May in a menu composed by the students, and anyone wanting a Thai massage will soon be able to book in at The Graduate Salon for a bit of pampering.

Nikola Komorowska, Beauty Therapy student, said: “It was an amazing experience. We learnt skills we would never be able to learn in the UK. What’s more, we were able to discover what Thai culture is like, and how people live in such a faraway country. To be honest, I wasn’t ready to come home.”

Ania Bodimeade, fellow Beauty Therapy student, said: “The people in Thailand are so very friendly and warm. Everyone was kind and made us feel so welcome.”

Two of the apprentice chefs who went on the trip work at Unity Place.

Nick Male, Head Executive Chef at Unity Place, said: “The recent trip to Thailand was an incredible opportunity for our Unity Place apprentices, to broaden their horizons and deepen their understanding of global cuisine. It was amazing to see how inspired and enthusiastic Chloe and Fraser were when they returned – full of new ideas, techniques, and a renewed passion for their craft. Experiences like this not only strengthen their skills but also fuel their ambition to build successful careers in the culinary world.”

The trip was enabled by a Turing Grant from the Department for Education, which is made for educational trips and work placements around the world – particularly for students from deprived areas.

Maria Bowness, MK College Group Director for Curriculum and Pedagogy, was in overall charge of the trip. She said it was lifechanging for her as much as the students: “Some of our students had never been out of Milton Keynes before, let alone out of the country. We made clear to them before we went that this wasn’t a holiday – it was a serious work opportunity.

“I was so impressed by the way they all took that very much to heart. We put them through a tough selection process, but they became fabulous ambassadors for the College and the country. The travel company we used in Thailand was impressed by how punctual and respectful our students were.  Young people can get a really bad reputation, but the trip reinforced how impressive and committed our students are and I am extremely proud of them.”

Book into the Brasserie or visit the Graduate Salon in Bletchley.

T Levels vs A Levels: Which Path is Right for You? https://mkcollege.ac.uk/blog/t-levels-vs-a-levels-which-path-is-right-for-you/ Mon, 17 Mar 2025 11:36:50 +0000 https://mkcollege.ac.uk/?post_type=blog&p=36448

T Levels vs A Levels: Which Path is Right for You?

Deciding what to do after GCSEs is a big step, and with new qualifications emerging, it’s more important than ever to understand your options. A Levels have been the traditional academic route for students aiming for university, but T Levels offer a more hands-on approach to learning, designed with direct career progression in mind. At Milton Keynes College, we offer both A Levels and T Levels, giving students the flexibility to choose a qualification that aligns with their learning style and future ambitions. But which one is right for you? Understanding the differences can help you make an informed decision about your next steps.

What Are A Levels?

A Levels are subject-based qualifications studied over two years, giving students the chance to specialise in areas they are passionate about. Typically, students choose three subjects, with taking a fourth being quite rare and usually only an option for those studying Further Maths. A Levels combine a mix of coursework and exams depending on the subject and are ideal for those who enjoy academic learning and want to keep their career options open.

One of the key benefits of A Levels is flexibility. You can study a combination of subjects that complement each other, such as Maths, Further Maths, and Computer Science for a technology-focused career, or English, History, and Politics for those interested in the humanities. This variety allows students to explore different fields before committing to a specific university course or career path.

Most universities require A Levels for entry, making them a great option for students considering a degree.

What Are T Levels?

T Levels are a new type of qualification designed to bridge the gap between academic study and real-world industry experience. Each T Level is equivalent to three A Levels and focuses on a specific sector, such as Digital, Health, Engineering, or Business. Unlike A Levels, where students study multiple subjects, T Levels allow you to specialise in one area, preparing you for a career in that field.

One of the defining features of T Levels is the built-in industry placement, where students complete a minimum of 315 hours of work experience with an employer. This provides hands-on training and insight into the workplace, making graduates highly employable.

While T Levels are career-focused, they don’t limit your options—students can still progress to university, higher-level apprenticeships, or directly into employment after completing the qualification.

For those who prefer learning by doing, T Levels offer a structured approach with a combination of classroom learning, practical experience, and industry-led projects. The qualification is developed in partnership with businesses, ensuring that students graduate with the skills that employers are actively looking for.

Key Differences Between A Levels and T Levels

While both A Levels and T Levels are two-year courses that help students prepare for their future, the learning experience is very different.

A Levels are best suited for students who enjoy academic study, prefer a mix of subjects, and want the freedom to explore different career paths before committing to one. They are widely accepted by universities and offer a traditional approach to education.

T Levels, on the other hand, are ideal for students who already have a clear career path in mind and want a more structured, hands-on learning experience. The combination of classroom study and practical work placements ensures students develop industry-specific skills, making them job-ready as soon as they complete their qualification.

Another key difference is the assessment style. A Levels typically involve written exams and coursework, testing a student’s ability to analyse and apply knowledge across a range of subjects. T Levels include a mix of exams, practical assessments, and employer-based projects, making them better suited for students who thrive in applied learning environments.

Which Option Is Right for You?

When choosing between A Levels and T Levels, consider your learning style, career aspirations, and preferred way of working.

If you enjoy academic study, value flexibility, and are considering university, then A Levels might be the best choice. If you prefer a more structured, career-focused approach with real-world experience, then T Levels could be the better fit.

At Milton Keynes College, we support students in making the right choice for their future. Whether you opt for A Levels or T Levels, you’ll receive expert guidance, access to modern learning facilities, and opportunities to develop your skills in a way that works best for you.

If you’re still unsure which path to take, our team at MK College can provide advice and insights based on your interests and career goals.

Studying A Levels at College: A Fresh Approach to Learning

The transition from GCSEs to A Levels is a significant step in any student’s education journey. Traditionally, A Levels have been associated with sixth forms, but studying them at a college offers a different and often more flexible experience. At Milton Keynes College, students can access a supportive environment, expert teaching, and a more independent approach to learning. If you’re considering taking A Levels at a college rather than a school setting, here’s what you can expect.

A Different Learning Environment

One of the biggest differences between studying A Levels at a college versus a school is the learning atmosphere. MK College provides a more adult-like setting, where students are encouraged to take greater responsibility for their studies while still receiving the guidance they need to succeed.

At Milton Keynes College, students benefit from:

  • Specialist Tutors – Learn from subject experts who have industry and academic experience.
  • Personalised Support – Dedicated time with tutors and plenty of opportunities for interactive discussions.
  • State-of-the-Art Facilities – Access to modern learning spaces, libraries, and study areas.

This balance of independence and structured support can help students prepare for university or the world of work.

Why Study A Levels at MK College?

Choosing to study A Levels at MK College opens doors to a more enriched and diverse educational experience. Some of the key benefits include:

  • A Broad Choice of Subjects – From traditional subjects like Maths and English to newer disciplines tailored to emerging industries.
  • Flexible Learning Styles – A combination of classroom teaching, independent study, and real-world application.
  • A Supportive Community – Access to Additional Learning Support for students who need extra help with their studies.
  • University and Career Progression – Many students go on to higher education, apprenticeships, or directly into employment.

Unlike a school-based sixth form, colleges often attract students from a wider area, offering a more diverse and dynamic student community.

What to Expect from A Level Study

Studying A Levels requires a higher level of critical thinking, research skills, and time management. Here’s what a typical week at MK College might look like:

  • Classroom Learning – Engaging lessons delivered by expert tutors.
  • Independent Study – A key part of A Level success is managing your own workload effectively.
  • Practical Experience – Depending on the subject, you may engage in fieldwork, experiments, or industry-related projects.
  • Exam Preparation – Support with essay writing, revision techniques, and exam strategies.

Many students appreciate the college approach, which fosters independence while providing structured guidance to help them thrive academically.

How A Levels Fit Into Your Future

Studying A Levels can lead to various career and education pathways. Many students use them as a stepping stone to university, higher apprenticeships, or employment, depending on their chosen subjects and career ambitions.

At Milton Keynes College, students have access to:

  • University Application Support – Help with UCAS applications, personal statements, and choosing the right course.
  • Apprenticeship Opportunities – Advice on combining A Levels with work-based learning.
  • Industry Links – Guidance on career routes that align with your chosen subjects.

The skills gained from A Levels – such as problem-solving, communication, and analytical thinking – are highly valued by employers and universities alike.

MK College students’ culinary adventure in Thailand: a trainer’s perspective

In February 2025, 15 students studying Level 3 Beauty Therapy, and 21 Level 3 Professional Cookery students from Milton Keynes College embarked on a once-in-a-lifetime field trip to Thailand. The College was able to secure funding through the Department for Education’s Turing Grant, which gives education providers the opportunity to apply for funding to support their students with study and work placements around the world.

How it all began

Students who wished to participate were given the opportunity to submit a cover letter highlighting their motivation for signing up for the trip and how it would benefit them and influence their future careers. Following an interview, the successful students went on to win a place on the plane. In the weeks prior to the departure, staff and students supported each other in their preparations for the trip in fortnightly Student Readiness meetings. For some of the students who were selected, this was the first longer trip away from their parents.

The culinary adventure, overseen by Julian Vennis, Director at World City Links, involved the opportunity to study at the renowned Suan Dusit International Culinary School while staying in the Suan Dusit Place hotel. Alongside our guide and interpreter Grace, the staff and students spent an action-packed fifteen days in Bangkok. In between learning experiences in the kitchen, the students got to enjoy the good weather and visit local attractions, such as the floating market near Ratchaburi and a visit to the Elephant World sanctuary at Kanchanaburi.

The students participated in lectures throughout the trip and learned the ins and outs of traditional Thai cuisine. This included a lecture on the ‘Edible Foundations of Thai Civilisation’ and an inspirational discussion about the origins of Thai cuisine and its essential links to culture, well-being and family. The students also had the opportunity to participate in a workshop on vegetable carving and garnishes. Both students and staff created intricate carrot flowers, carrot leaves, cucumber flowers and aubergine lotus leaves, achieving “wonderful results.”

During their learning days in the kitchen, the students prepared a variety of dishes, including – but not limited to – Tom Saap (hot and sour pork rib soup), Pad Thai, Tom Yum Goong (spicy river prawn soup), Nam Prik Noom (Northern Thai green chilli dip), Bai Liang Pad Kai (stir-fried malindjo leaves with eggs) and Gang Leung (yellow curry), as well as sweet dishes such as Kanom Kluay (steamed banana cake) and luk chup, sweet mung bean paste moulded into fruit-like shapes.

I consider myself a foodie, and my favourite dishes on the trip was definitely Pad Kra Pao, the taste and simplicity of which were lovely. My second favourite dish of the tour was the Massaman curry, which has great flavours and a wonderful texture. The Yum Nua, a spicy salad accompanied by marinated, sliced tenderloin stake, was exquisite. The Khao Soi, a delightfully tasty curry noodle soup with chicken, crispy noodles, onions, chilli and lime also deserves a special mention – it was so good that I polished off two bowls!

Praise for the students

The praise for the students’ work and enthusiasm was evident from both us, the College staff who accompanied the students and the staff at the Culinary School. Once again, the students have achieved 100%. They collaborated harmoniously, professionally, and enthusiastically. We are incredibly proud of their accomplishments – it is wonderful to watch them grow, learn new techniques and forge new friendships. They have been a credit to both us and MK College as a whole.

On the final day of the students’ kitchen-based learning, the days of practicing culminated in a practical test. After selecting their dishes from “Grace’s magic pot” and planning the night before, the students worked together intelligently, cooperating in their teams effectively and building upon their learning so far. With a Thai Cookery qualification as the prize, the students were eager to impress the judging Cookery School lecturers. Receiving both constructive criticism and praise, the teams did exceptionally well. During the closing ceremony, the students were awarded with certificates and the Cookery School’s branded chef jackets.

The trip was made extra special thanks to our tour guide Grace Siritanapornpan. Grace was with us constantly, acting as interpreter and guiding and supporting us with great effect in the kitchen with a great sense of skill and knowledge. Our success and the Thailand experience would not have been the same without her.

The final days of the trip

With the triumphs of their culinary adventure fresh in their minds, the group had the opportunity to explore more of Thailand in the final weekend of the trip. During the visit to Ko Kret Island just north of Bangkok, we explored its terracotta crafts, fabric workshops, and the important Buddhist temple, Wat Poramai Yikawat. We also had the opportunity to cruise along the Chao Phraya River, taking in the sights and sounds of the surroundings. Visiting the Thonburi and Chatuchak Markets, both staff and students amazed by their sizes, with Chatuchak being host to more than 15,000 stalls and 11,505 vendors.

The final day of the trip was spent on the Bang Saen Beach, recovering from two weeks of walking “here, there and everywhere.” It was an excellent time to reflect on what we had all achieved over the two weeks. The distance travelled not only from the UK to Thailand, but the journey of learning and progress we all made. We will all be leaving Bangkok with unforgettable memories, new friends, and new learning.

MK College students support prestigious dinner with High Sheriff at Bletchley Park

On Thursday 13th February, Milton Keynes College staff and students joined the High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire’s Justice Dinner. Hosted in the Mansion Ball Room at Bletchley Park, the guests were welcomed to the event by Iain Standen, the CEO of Bletchley Park Trust. The dinner was attended by around 50 guests from several local organisations, including Thames Valley Police, Open University, and The Parks Trust.

Kurshida Mirza, the High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire, has worked closely with MK College and Buckinghamshire College Group in her Shrieval year, bringing in the new addition of High Sheriff College Champions. The High Sheriff College Champions, selected from both colleges, have collaborated with Kurshida on various projects aimed at tackling crime and supporting young people.

Kurshida asked MK College Catering and Hospitality students to provide catering services for her High Sheriff’s Justice Dinner. Catering students prepared, cooked and served the food to the guests, fulfilling the High Sheriff’s requirement to ensure that all food was halal. Alongside various canapes, the guests were served chicken “kiev” ballotine and curried cauliflower steak, with pannacotta and ginger biscuit crumble for dessert.

The theme of the Justice Dinner was the importance of investing in young people and enabling their voices to be heard. With this aligning well with MK College Group’s mission and daily work, MK College Group CEO and Principal Sally Alexander said: “Young people are our future, and at Milton Keynes College Group, we see it as our responsibility to equip them with the skills they need to navigate their lives, find their passions and use their voices to make a difference. We work hard to create opportunities for them, empowering them to identify where they can and want to make an impact.

“I am particularly delighted that Kurshida’s Shrieval year as High Sheriff aligns so closely with the values we hold dear. Working with communities across Milton Keynes to combat social exclusion, strengthening communities and creating thriving partnerships – these are all goals we champion at MK College.”

Over the course of the evening, the guests heard from a few interesting speakers. This included a conversation with YMCA, where two YMCA residents, Faith and Jacob, shared their stories. This concluded in a chat with Jack Davy-Dupris, a Community Development Worker at MK YMCA. Other speakers included HHJ Jonathan Cooper and HHJ Patrick Peruško, who spoke to their fellow guests about how the crown and family courts have evolved over the years to better empower young people and involve them more in the justice process.

Demonstrating that hard work leads to reward, Kurshida also presented an award to MK College’s Head of Community and Engagement and Staff Governor Rebecca Myrie in recognition of their great and valuable services to the community. Rebecca Myrie said: “I was thrilled and very surprised to receive a High Sheriff’s award. Kurshida is someone who brings people together and makes a positive difference to the community – she’s used her role as High Sheriff to amplify this work and we’re so proud to have played a small part in it.”

Kurshida said: “It has been a privilege to work with MK College and to have the MK College Catering and Hospitality students provide the dinner which I know everyone enjoyed very much. The students produced the menu and prepared the food, delivering a top-quality chef experience.

“I believe it is important to enable young people’s voices to be heard and an imperative for us to work together to empower and nurture their development. This means encouraging them to take charge of their lives and develop their best skills, potential and aspirations. Afterall, they are our future!  I am also very grateful to Bletchley Park for providing the setting of the Mansion which added to the experience – thank you!”
