College Group’s Director is a winner at Women Leaders Awards

On Thursday 12th June, Milton Keynes College Group’s Director of Curriculum and Pedagogy, Maria Bowness, won a Women Leaders Award in the “Skills, Education and Training” category. The ceremony took place at Hilton DoubleTree at Stadium MK, with over 40 finalists in attendance.

Women Leaders is a registered charity established to recognise outstanding women, promote and strengthen women’s leadership, and support gender equality and diversity. Its awards celebrate women leaders around Milton Keynes, recognising their work in their respective sectors as well as their work on gender advocacy.

With over 30 years of experience in Skills, Education and Training, Maria currently serves as the Group Director for Curriculum and Pedagogy at Milton Keynes College Group.

Her role spans a wide range of responsibilities across the College Group. From ensuring that our curricula are both comprehensive and exciting to being the driving force behind most of our biggest employer partnerships, Maria’s work has been essential in transforming the Group’s goals into actions, partnerships and success stories.

Some examples of her work at Milton Keynes College Group include: the strategic development of the College’s Skills Academy, which has improved student retention and enrolment; the strategic design of our A Level programme, launched in September 2024; maintaining a strong partnership with Silverstone to enable our Catering and Hospitality students to gain valuable on-site work experience; facilitating the ‘Cut It Out’ campaign for Hairdressing and Beauty students in partnership with Thames Valley Police; and securing £105,000 in funding from the British Council’s Turing Scheme, which enabled 36 Beauty and Catering students to travel to Thailand on a learning trip in February 2025.

Sally Alexander, CEO and Principal of Milton Keynes College, said: “This is absolutely fantastic news – this award is a testament to Maria’s vision, dedication and the incredibly positive influence she’s had on our colleagues and students alike. Maria has always gone above and beyond to create meaningful and life-changing learning experiences for our students, whether in the classroom, with our employer partners or beyond.

“I am delighted that she has been recognised as an influential woman leader because this is truly what she is.”

Maria Bowness said: “I am proud and humbled to have won the category for Skills, Education and Training. To be nominated was an honour, to become a finalist was a wonderful surprise, to win was absolutely unbelievable.

MK College prison learners win big at national art awards

It’s been another hugely successful year for Milton Keynes College’s prison learners who have taken part in this year’s Koestler Awards, run by the UK’s best known and oldest prison arts charity.

The Koestler Arts awards is an annual national arts competition and Koestler Arts also hold exhibitions and events across the UK to showcase the talent and potential of prisoners and people in secure settings – often causing visitors to reconsider negative stereotypes.

Every one of the College’s 30 sites had learners gain Koestler Awards, with prison learners being awarded a total of 511 different awards.

Mark Fisher, a Prison Services Director at MK College Group, commented: “Our prisons have been extremely well represented at the Koestler Awards for many years; however, we are pleased to say that this total is the largest ever and is a year-on-year increase from 456 in 2023.

“Our teachers encourage and support the learners to select and present their best work. They also take the responsibility for collecting and cataloguing all the work. They wrap up everything, even large-scale models and ensure all work is sent to Koestler. Making sure it can be traced en route and sent back to the creator after the judging. All this activity is over and above what is required by a normal teacher and is a huge undertaking each year.

Turner Prize winner, Jeremy Deller, and former prisoner-turned-artist, John Costi, will co-curate No Comment, the 17th edition of Koestler Arts’ annual UK exhibition at the Southbank Centre. The show will feature a selection of works by prisoners, secure mental health patients, immigration detainees, and other individuals in secure settings, from the UK and abroad, all submitted to the Koestler Awards.

Of the 200 artworks selected for the exhibition, 12 are from the two prisons on the Isle of Wight, with seven from HMP Albany and 5 from HMP Parkhurst, a fantastic achievement.

Koestler asked tutors nationwide to put forward suggestions for a theme for their 2025 competition and exhibition, and we’re delighted to announce they have chosen ‘Wings’, a concept suggested by Richard Wallis, Programme Manager at HMP Albany.

Mark Fisher added: “Congratulations to all our learners who contributed artworks and were awarded prizes, and to their tutors who have supported them during this process”.

MK College Group hosts launch of 2025 Milton Keynes Business Achievement Awards as headline sponsor

The Milton Keynes Business Achievement Awards (MKBAA) 2025 was officially launched on 12th September under the theme of “Bridging the Gap: Skills & Learning for Our Future Workforce” at Milton Keynes College’s Chaffron Way campus.

Underscoring the urgent need to address the persistent skills gap affecting local businesses, the announcement was made against the backdrop of Milton Keynes College – proud host of the MKBAA 2025 launch event and officially named as a new headline sponsor.

The theme for next year’s awards comes as Milton Keynes faces a pressing skills shortage despite its dynamic growth – a fact reflected in last year’s SEMLEP Business Survey which reported that 45% of businesses in the local area find recruiting people with the right skills difficult.

It’s a gap mirrored nationally with 24% of vacancies in England resulting from skill shortages.

MKBAA 2025 will energise the debate on bridging the skills gap within the local region, ensuring Milton Keynes retains its position as one of the UK’s most productive and innovative cities.

The theme also aligns with the City Council’s MK City Plan 2025, which emphasises strengthening Milton Keynes’ regional and national economic role by improving access to education, skills, and training, particularly within the city’s technology and digital industries which accounts for one in every three jobs.

Nicholas Mann, Chair of Milton Keynes Business Leaders Partnership (MKBLP) the organisers of MKBAA, commented: “Milton Keynes is a thriving hub of innovation and growth, but our success hinges on having a skilled workforce that can meet the demands of our dynamic economy. The 2025 MKBAA theme highlights the urgency of this challenge and the need for strategic partnerships between businesses and educational institutions. Businesses must play their part in finding a resolution to this challenge.”

Sally Alexander, CEO and Group Principal of Milton Keynes College Group, added: “Milton Keynes College is proud to be a sponsor of the MK Businesses Achievement Awards for 2025. Our sponsorship of these awards is a testament to our commitment to the Milton Keynes community and to the vital role that businesses play in driving economic growth and creating opportunities for all. We look forward to celebrating the achievements of local businesses and highlight the importance of collaboration between education and industry.”

Students of the Year 2024

Milton Keynes College Group names Student of the Year

Graphic Design student, Nashe Mataya, has been named Milton Keynes College Group’s Student of the Year for 2024.

Nashe won the overall award having won in the Creative & Digital Arts category. The College Group’s Students of the Year Awards recognises learners who have achieved in their studies, with twenty categories covering the College Group’s Further Education provision, adult learning, inclusive learning, ESOL, the South Central Institute of Technology (SCIoT) in Bletchley and its prison education services.

“I’m shocked but also blessed to win this award,” Nashe said, at the College’s fabulous awards night held at the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit.  Sitting with family and friends, he said, “Everyone who came tonight showed me such love and support; the people on my table are the people who got me here and I’m so grateful to them all.”

Nashe reserved particular praise for his mum, who he said, “is the strongest woman I know and has always pushed me to go as far as I can.”

The graphic design student was singled out by the judges, not just for his hard work and talent, but also for the maturity he showed when struggling with personal difficulties halfway through his course.

“Nashe took the brave but really sensible decision to take some time away from his course, only coming back when he felt stronger and more able to cope with the rigours of his studies,” said Sally Alexander, CEO and Principal of Milton Keynes College Group.  “He came back stronger and has produced some wonderful work, as well as helping other students as a surrogate tutor, which shows what a level-headed and kind young man he is.”

Nashe is preparing to continue his studies with a Graphic Design degree at Northampton University, and while he’s looking forward to the new challenge, he admits he will be sad to leave the College.

“I’m gutted to be leaving,” he said. “I’ve met so many cool people here and I’ll always remember my time at the College with great fondness.  I want to thank my teachers for everything they’ve done for me.  You get so much support here, and I know I wouldn’t have achieved this without their kindness and help.”

The student awards event involved learners in every area; Catering and Hospitality learners prepared, cooked and served the food that guests enjoyed, Performing Arts students entertained the guests before and during the awards and Games and Animation student Sienna Rogers was a co-host for the evening.

Sally added “Our Students of the Year Awards is always a fantastic event, offering us the opportunity to recognise and celebrate the achievements of our learners and the staff who have supported them.

“A huge congratulations to Nashe as our overall winner as well as all of our student winners, their family and tutors who have supported them in achieving great things.”
