What is the difference between applying and enrolling for college?

If you’re leaving school and planning your next steps, you might hear a lot about applying and enrolling at college. They sound familiar, but they’re two different steps in your journey.

Here’s a simple breakdown to help you understand, and make sure you don’t miss out!

Step 1: Applying

Applying is the first thing you do when you decide you’re interested in joining a course at college. Think of it like putting your name down to say “I’m interested!”

  • You usually apply during Year 11, before you sit your GCSEs.
  • You don’t need your exam results yet, just your predicted grades.
  • This step saves your spot and shows you’re serious about the course.

After you apply, we’ll likely invite you for an interview. This could be over the phone, in person at college, or by questionnaire. It’s a chance for us to get to know you and make sure the course is a good fit.

So, applying is not you officially joining the course – it’s just letting us know you would like a place.

Step 2: Enrolling

Enrolling is when you officially join the college and the course, and it happens after we’ve offered you a place.

This takes place after you’ve received your GCSE results, usually in August.

  • You’ll receive an email from us with full instructions on how to enrol – so keep an eye on your inbox!
  • Some enrolments will happen face to face at college, others will be online.
  • If your enrolment is face to face remember to bring your GCSE results along with you.
  • During enrolment, you’ll confirm your place, complete any paperwork, and officially become a Milton Keynes College student.

Just applying and getting an offer isn’t enough, you must enrol to secure your place and start college.

Don’t wait, enrol as soon as you can!

Once you’ve got your results and received your enrolment email, don’t delay. Places can fill up quickly, and we want to make sure you get onto the course that’s right for you.

If you’ve already applied, great! Keep an eye on your inbox for communications over the summer. If you haven’t applied yet, there’s still time we also have Advisory Days coming up after results day, find out more here.

Milton Keynes College apprentices enjoy dream visit to Downing Street

Milton Keynes College apprentices working in Formula One visited Downing Street to celebrate 75 years of the sport. The apprentices had the opportunity to meet some of the biggest names in the sport – all as guests of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

Jordan Smith, Engineering Workplace trainer at Milton Keynes College Group said it was the experience of a lifetime: “The apprentices were quite nervous at the beginning, so I asked them who they’d most like to speak to, and they said Sir Jackie Stewart, so we just walked up and said hello.”

“The apprentices are all big fans, but he was so nice to them. He told them they are the future of the motorsport industry, that they should be proud of their part in it, and he even thanked them for being involved.”

Emily Darlington, Milton Keynes Central MP, said: “What a fantastic experience for this great group of apprentices. Milton Keynes is the heart of F1 and with institutions like Milton Keynes College and the Open University in our city, it’s no surprise that so many young people in MK are making their mark. It’s also amazing to see so many more women getting involved in the sport.  I’m so glad to see everyone’s talent recognised in Downing Street.”

Miah, one of the apprentices from Milton Keynes College, was recently named as the youngest ever finalist in the Milton Keynes Women Leaders Awards. She said she’s it’s been a whirlwind few weeks to follow that with a visit to the Prime Minister’s home: “Visiting number 10 was an honour and a privilege. Seeing likeminded apprentices and others coming together at Downing Street to celebrate 75 years of F1 is an experience I will never forget.”

It has also been a rollercoaster ride for Jordan, who recently completed his teacher training at the College after a career in railway engineering. He said: “The College gave me the opportunity to move into teaching at just the right time, and I absolutely love it. I work with the apprentices on health and safety, electrical and fluid power, and it’s such a rewarding job.

“I’ve been able to do my own studies for my teaching qualifications alongside my work in the classroom, and it’s given me insights into different industries, visiting the apprentices at their employers in Formula One and other industries. It’s inspiring.”

Jordan says he was initially quite daunted by the idea of becoming a teacher, but he’s had brilliant support. “My Dad trained officers in the RAF, and between him and the people of the College who’ve looked after me along the way, I’ve always felt that there were people I could talk to about how to progress.

“I’ve really built my confidence in the classroom; I can put together my own lessons to make sure they’re engaging for the apprentices who are, frankly, brilliant. It’s not like school in that they’re all there because they want to be. It’s the most rewarding job you could ever do.”

The College Group is currently looking for teachers in a whole range of subjects. While we are keen to hear from experienced professionals, we are also searching for people coming from industry like Jordan, and recent graduates with up-to-date knowledge of their subjects. The right candidates will be put through their teacher training while they begin their careers.

For more information on becoming a teacher at MK College Group read more here.

Why English and Maths Are the Golden Ticket for Employers https://mkcollege.ac.uk/blog/why-english-and-maths-are-the-golden-ticket-for-employers/ Thu, 06 Mar 2025 12:15:21 +0000 https://mkcollege.ac.uk/?post_type=blog&p=36234

Why English and Maths Are the ‘Golden Ticket’ for Employers

English and maths aren’t always everyone’s favourite subjects, but they can often be the key to unlocking future career and education opportunities.

At MK College, over 1,000 students are currently studying GCSE English or maths, with several hundred more working towards Functional Skills qualifications. These students come from a wide range of backgrounds, including ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) learners looking to improve their English and maths, students taking these subjects alongside vocational courses or apprenticeships, and adults returning to education to gain essential qualifications later in life.

Here, Tamsyn Kramer, Head of English at MK College, and Tom Heath, Head of Maths, discuss why these subjects are vital for success—no matter what career path students choose.

Why Are English and Maths So Important for Success?

Tamsyn: English and maths open doors, providing students with more opportunities in college and beyond. GCSE or Functional Skills Level 2 qualifications are the ‘golden ticket’ that many employers look for. Higher-level courses often require these qualifications, so having them gives students greater flexibility in their future choices. If a student’s chosen career requires university study, they will need GCSE English and maths or a Functional Skills Level 2 qualification to progress.

Tom: For adult learners, gaining English and maths qualifications can be life changing. Many have been held back in their careers due to a lack of qualifications and gaining them can boost confidence and increase earning potential. It also allows them to support their children with schoolwork. One of our current GCSE Maths students is over 70 years old proving that it’s never too late to learn!

How Do English and Maths Help Develop Other Essential Skills?

Tamsyn: English is all about communication, which is one of the top soft skills employers look for. Strong written and spoken communication skills are essential in every profession.

Tom: Maths develops problem-solving and analytical thinking, which are crucial in many careers. We also relate maths to vocational subjects wherever possible—for example, construction students use Pythagoras’ theorem for roof beams, while sports students work with percentages to calculate BMI. Maths also builds essential life skills, such as budgeting and scheduling, which are valuable in both personal and professional life.

How Does the College Support Students Who Find English and Maths Challenging?

Tom: We offer additional study and revision sessions, including holiday workshops. Many of our tutors provide extra support at lunchtimes, before and after lessons. We also offer online resources, such as Maths Watch, which provides personalised learning targets. For students who cannot attend college in person, we supply electronic resources to ensure they don’t miss out.

Tamsyn: We encourage parents to get involved so they can support their children at home. Our aim is to be as flexible as possible and cater to students’ individual needs.

How Can GCSE English and Maths Help Students Progress in Their Careers?

Tom: Passing English and maths can make a huge difference to a student’s future. One of our biggest success stories is Madi, who struggled with maths for three years, failing every time—though she got closer with each attempt. With determination and support from her tutor, she finally achieved a Grade 4, which allowed her to pursue her dream of studying midwifery at university. Her story is proof that perseverance, self-belief, and hard work can lead to success.

How Can Parents Support Their Child’s Learning in English and Maths?

Tom: At the start of each academic year, we hold parent information sessions, sharing key dates and useful revision resources. We also encourage parents to build strong relationships with teachers to better support their children’s learning.

Tamsyn: Parents can help by ensuring their child knows their exam dates—please don’t book holidays during GCSE exams! Supporting good study habits, making sure they arrive at college on time, and encouraging them to get enough sleep and eat a healthy breakfast on exam days can make a big difference.

Meet the Work Experience Team

Who are the Work Experience Team, and what do they do?

My name is Julie Newman, and I’m the Deputy Head of the Work Experience Team. I oversee the day-to-day running of the team.

We’re a team of seven, including four work placement coordinators who manage work experience across the college and coordinate T Level Industry placements. We also have two administrators, who play a hands-on role in ensuring all employer placements meet regulations, like health and safety requirements.

How does the work experience programme support students?

As part of their study programme, all students must complete 35 hours of work experience. Some courses require additional hours to meet professional licensing requirements. T Level students have a bigger commitment, as they must complete 315 hours of work experience as part of their qualification.

T Level students usually work with one or two employers, while students on other study programmes can try multiple placements.

How do students find a work experience placement?

We encourage students to take the lead in finding a placement. It’s a great way for them to build employability skills – contacting employers, sending CVs, and networking.

Our Work Experience Team works closely with curriculum staff to support students in their search. The Employer Team sometimes passes on business contacts, and tutors – who have strong industry experience – often help by connecting students with opportunities.

What industries do students typically need work experience in?

Our students gain experience in a wide range of industries, from fashion and football to manufacturing and engineering. If we offer a course in it, chances are there’s a placement opportunity available.

How does the team help students prepare for their placements?

Throughout the year, we integrate employability skills into the curriculum. We help students write CVs, provide guidance on using platforms like UniFrog, and offer templates to assist with applications.

What role can parents play in supporting their child’s work experience?

Parents can play a key role by using their own connections to find opportunities for their child in their chosen industry. They can also support their child with CV writing and researching companies, and most importantly, encourage their child to take the process seriously and apply to multiple employers.

Parents can also remind their child of the benefits of work experience, which include:

  • First-hand experience of the workplace.
  • Insight into different industries.
  • Developing new skills.
  • Boosting confidence and understanding of work environments.
  • Exploring different career paths.

Can parents offer placements?

Yes! Some parents provide placements through their own businesses, though we don’t specifically ask. If you or a family member can offer an opportunity, it could make a big difference for a student.

Do placements lead to future opportunities?

Absolutely! Many of our T Level students receive job offers during or after their placements. Work experience can also be a stepping stone to university or full-time employment in the industry.

What if a student struggles to find a placement?

Our coordinators provide one-to-one support, taking personal circumstances into account. If a student isn’t quite ready for the workplace, we help build their confidence through workshops, guest speaker sessions, and industry projects where they’re mentored by employers.

What advice do you have for parents hesitant about offering placements?

By offering a placement, you’re helping to develop the next generation of workers. It can also benefit your business – many companies find that mentoring a young person is a great way to develop their own staff’s skills.

If you’re interested in providing a placement, email our Work Experience Team at workexperienceteam@mkcollege.ac.uk.

Top 10 tips to nail your first CV

Our 10 top tips

  1. We recommend you put your name and contact details at the top of the first page – the company need to get hold of you if they would like to invite you in for interview so make sure they are correct.
  2. Your email address should be professional and represent you in a mature way – it’s a good idea to set one up just for applications and work communications.
  3. Always put your most recent experience and education first and the oldest last. Don’t include details of your primary school but do list your current subjects and predicted or actual grades.
  4. Include details of any school achievements, work experience and volunteering as well as paid jobs.
  5. Look at the key skills required for the role and demonstrate you have experience of these, whether from school, work, hobbies or interests.
  6. Spell check your CV and ask someone to read it to make sure there are no mistakes. You’re not going to demonstrate your excellent communication skills with a typo!
  7. Your CV shouldn’t be longer than two sides of A4. It should be a concise overview of you, not your autobiography.
  8. There are lots of sample CV’s available online, but make sure yours is personal to you and not just a cut and paste.
  9. Use the same font throughout your CV and make sure it looks clear – it can help to print it out so that you can check it’s easy to read.
  10. Lastly, save your CV as a pdf so that it can’t be changed and use a sensible file name. Your first and last names as well as the date is a good naming format.

From Computer Studies to Global Senior Vice President https://mkcollege.ac.uk/blog/paul-gartside-sciot-computer-studies/ Wed, 06 Jul 2022 15:28:28 +0000 https://mkcollege.ac.uk/blog/paul-gartside-sciot-computer-studies/

From Computer Studies to Global Senior Vice President

Paul Gartside graduated from college in 1989 after doing a BTEC National Diploma in Computer Studies. His career has taken him all over the world and has now come full circle, back to Milton Keynes College. Paul is now Security & Data Analytics Coach and Curriculum Innovator at the South Central Institute Of Technology.

Tell us about your career after MK College

I went straight into the computer industry from college getting a great job with research machines. Security was a topic that interested me greatly and after a couple of jobs progressing as a Network Engineer I applied for a job with Dr Solomon’s Anti-virus, now McAfee Security.

I spent the next 25 years travelling the world doing security stuff, writing technology patents, and working with loads of super smart people. I rose through the company until I became Global Senior Vice President R&D for Data Protection & Encryption in 2006.

About 3 years ago I left McAfee in need of a work/life change. I really wanted to get back to my technical roots and I’d spent an increasing amount of time doing mentoring at the company, which is something I wanted to explore further.

Subsequently I joined South Central Institute of Technology as Digital Coach for Cyber Security & Data Analytics where I get to do cool stuff and do my level best to inspire and grow the next generation.

“It really is the most gratifying thing to see students grow and achieve success out in the workplace.”

How did your Computer Studies course help you get to the place you’re at now?

I really wasn’t a good student, I scraped by. I was more interested in taking things apart and teaching myself how to do ‘cool stuff’. At that time computers were about the only thing I was good at and the college provided an excellent opportunity for me to explore this further.

Moreover, I was shy when I was younger and going to Uni really was too big a leap. I knew I wanted to actually go and work. College gave me what I needed to get through the door of research machines, both with technical knowledge and social improvement.

Do you have any advice for students who are thinking of applying to MK College?

Make it happen! The computer industry is hot and growing and so are companies in Milton Keynes. There really is no better time than now to build excellent knowledge and an amazing career. There are also now far more pathways in tech than there has ever been.

If you wanted to get into computers, you need to demonstrate your skills. I would recommend a Level 3 Introduction to Computer Science and then go on to the South Central IOT just across the road at Bletchley and do an HNC/HND Computer Pathway or an Apprenticeship which is an excellent way to break into the industry without running up a sizable debt. (If you pick Cyber Security or Data Pathways, you’ll also get me )

Meet former Music Student Jodie Erica from MKFM

With the huge range of courses and study options on offer we love to see what careers our students go on to after studying at Milton Keynes College. We caught up with former Music Course student Jodie Erica, now Digital Media Presenter and the Head of Local Music at MKFM, Milton Keynes’ radio station.

Jodie studied Music at the Milton Keynes College Chaffron Way campus after completing a 9-month GCSE crash course to bump up some of her grades. Jodie is now enjoying a successful career with MKFM after studying at the College and says “the music course was the best thing I did for myself, I really started to find myself during that time, especially my confidence. I learned so much that still helps me now, I went on to do loads of open mics and gigs, releasing my own music, and now landing a job I absolutely love!”

Joining a class with like-minded people and learning applicable life skills are massive for anyone looking to start college. But it isn’t always clear which direction you want to choose. Initially Jodie planned to follow psychology as a career, but soon decided to completely change course and follow her passion for music.

“I felt very personally powerful as I was choosing what was best for me, I have MK College to thank for this”

– Jodie Erica, MKFM

“I received the most support from MK College, more than I did in my secondary school. Even when I completely changed course, MK College helped me in doing so and my teachers at the time were true cheerleaders! They positively pushed me and told me to go for it!

“You will always have that support and guidance, you are never alone, and I will always thank MK College for being there for me not only with my education, but also personally. Times were very tough for me, but I knew I had people I could turn to for advice and for support.”

With her ambition to get into the music industry Jodie said her greatest achievement during her studies was the confidence she found through performing on the course.

“What I loved the most was the practical work and performing. I will always remember a performance we did in front of our family and friends and the musical theatre students, I sang a song that was very personal to me and vulnerable, but it was the first time I let it all go and let it all out, it felt amazing.”

Jodie has since landed a job with a local radio station as a digital media presenter and Head of Local Music, she said “MKFM not only helps me with my own music career, but it enables me to help other local artists like myself.”

When asked whether she’d recommend the Music Course at Milton Keynes College to new students, Jodie stated “when I had tours of the College, I felt really comfortable, there were lots of facilities and lots of space, lots of study options, and also lots of support so it ended up being a no-brainer for me. I would recommend this course if you are into music production and the theory of music. This course really boosted my confidence and taught me a lot about the business side of music, not just the fun parts!”

Maddie Weatherill

After deciding to make regular exercise and a nutritious diet a priority in her life, Maddie wanted to learn more about the basics of health and fitness and improve her future career prospects in this growing industry, alongside her full-time Marketing job. Find out more about Maddie’s experience of studying a distance learning course in Improving Personal Exercise, Health and Nutrition.

Why did you want to study this course?

Finding love for health and fitness honestly changed my life. Almost 5 years ago now, I made the decision to start making going to the gym a habit and nourishing my body with nutritious foods – I was working a full-time office job over the summer whilst I was at university, and I knew that I would be sat down all day. It was a slow start, and it took a little while to gain my confidence, but it was the best lifestyle decision I have ever made.

Fuelling my body with good meals and pushing myself with different workouts at the gym makes me feel happier. It’s a full-on lifestyle for me now and I would love to bring my marketing skills over to the health and fitness industry in the future. I decided to study this course because I wanted to learn more about the basics of health and fitness and gain a qualification in this area, proving to future employers that this really is an industry I’m passionate about.

Why did you choose to study at MK College?

I studied at MK College after my GCSEs and had a fantastic experience. I knew that the support I would receive on the course would be second to none, so it seemed like the right place for me.

What did you take from the course?

I learned a lot of new things about the body’s anatomy, as well as more complex things like different bodily diseases and how internal systems work. I also learned how to devise a food and exercise plan which has come in handy for my everyday life.

I also built a strong overall foundation of knowledge within health and fitness, which I hope will help me to work in this industry in the future.

Do you have any advice for students who are thinking of applying to a distance learning course at MK College?

If there’s a course that you’re interested in or if you want to begin a pathway to a new career, you have absolutely nothing to lose! The distance learning courses are perfect because you can fit them in and around your lifestyle. You will have multiple units that you need to complete by a certain date, but you can decide when and where to complete those units in your own time.

You will also gain a recognised qualification after you have completed the course which will look great on your CV, especially if you are looking to break into that industry.
